Joe Scharf made his 2011 Northern Ontario provincial play-down debut a successful one.
Scharf (1-0), who curls out of the host Fort William Curling Club, used a four-ender in the ninth to propel his foursome to an 8-4 win over Englehart’s David MacInnes (0-1) on Sunday evening.
Jeff Currie, on the other hand, needs to get back on the winning track in a hurry.
Currie (0-2) made a spirited comeback, scoring five points from the seventh to ninth ends, but Geraldton’s John Salo (2-0) had the hammer in the crucial 10th end and edged his Thunder Bay opponent 6-5. It was Currie’s second loss in two outings.
Thunder Bay’s Mike Pozihun evened his record at 1-1 on Sunday evening, downing Dustin Montpellier’s North Bay rink 9-4, taking early control with a pair in the first with the hammer and a steal of two in the second. Montpellier fell to 0-2.
In other Draw 2 action, Sault Ste. Marie’s Brad Jacobs (1-0), the defending Northern Ontario champion, scored an easy 11-1 win over Stratton’s Tim Nordin (0-1).
A Thunder Bay rink has not represented the region at the Brier since 2003.
