THUNDER BAY – The vast expenses that come with competitive sport has led one cross-country skier to start a Go Fund Me campaign.
Alannah MacLean, a native of Sudbury who is now training in Thunder Bay with the National Development Centre, has her eyes on a world championship title.
She qualified for the World U23 championships in Rasnov, Romania, wich takes place Feb. 22 to 28, and is also looking to make a statement by qualifying for the Ski Tour Canada – a series of eight World Cup races starting in Gatineau to Montreal.
“This has been a long-standing dream of mine,” MacLean writes in her Go Fund Me post. “It is still surreal that I will be representing Canada on the world stage in a few short weeks.”
But the dream comes with a price tag.
“The combined cost of World Championships ($3,500) and Ski Tour Canada (approximately $3,000) exceeds my current budget,” she writes. “My goal is to raise $6,000 to cover the costs of these two trips.
MacLean is close to her goal, having collected just more than $4,000 as of Thursday morning.
