Nipigon would jump out to a two-goal lead in the first period on markers provided by Nick Parry and Brodie Biasiol only to see Travis Muller put the Stars on the board in the final minute of the opening frame.
Noah Cain would knot the score early in the middle stanza, but Steven St. Jean’s unassisted effort at 2:30 restored the Elks lead.
Muller would however strike shorthanded seven minutes into the period to tie the contest yet again only to see Matthew Mickleburgh bury his second of the season at 19:48 to make it 4-3 Nipigon after 40 minutes.
The score would then stay the way until Szura’s man advantage effort at 16:46 of the third period.
Ryan Williams made 48 saves to help the Elks pick up a point while Lee Pelletier did likewise in the Stars net facing 36 shots.
League play continues Sunday evening as Nipigon travels to Thunder Bay to meet the Screaming Eagles in an 8 p.m. start at Delaney Arena.
