A pair of big ends cost Thunder Bay’s Matthew Roberts rink Sunday night at the Canadian junior men’s curling championship.

Roberts, Zach Warkentin, Matt Joblin and Will Perozak were trailing 3-2 to Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone, then gave up four points in the sixth. They points back in the seventh and eighth, but gave up three more in the ninth to fall 10-4.

The Northern Ontario foursome is now 1-2 at the Fort McMurray, Alta. event. Under new 2013 rules, the top four teams in each seven-team pool advance to the championship pool. The bottom three teams on each side enter the seeding pool.

Each team will play the three teams from the opposite division, to be rank provinces 9-14 for the 2013 junior mixed doubles and the 2014 juniors.

On the women’s side, Thunder Bay’s Tirzah Keffer finally found her way into the win column, crushing the Northwest Territories’ Carina McKay-Saturnino 13-2 to improve to 1-2 through four draws.

Roberts takes on New Brunswick on Monday morning, while Keffer plays Prince Edward Island.
