Thunderwolves secures 110-89 victory over Regina

The Lakehead men's basketball team made it out on top after a 40-minute battle with the University of Regina Cougars, winning 110-89.

The Lakehead men's basketball team made it out on top after a 40-minute battle with the University of Regina Cougars, winning 110-89.

Lakehead's run and gun style was in full swing, despite a lot of sloppy defense and resultant fouls being called on both sides by the officials. Both teams were assessed in excess of 35 fouls.

Despite the high number of free throw attempted, Lakehead only converted 14 of 32.
Lakehead's big production came from behind the arc (
18 for 26) , while Regina's scoring came from their post players.

The game featured a look at the entire roster for both Lakehead and Regina, who were
looking to get the first game jitters behind them on Friday evening. Thunder Bay native
Matthew Schmidt showed particular hustle and shooting accuracy during his floor time, at
one point scoring 8 points straight for Lakehead in the 2nd half and finishing with 18 points.

Five other Thunderwolves finished in double figures.

"We're a deep team and showed a lot of hustle tonight, getting rebounds, steals, but we must also get better and show some restraint in knowing when to gamble and when to stay put," said  head coach Scott Morrison.

The Thunderwolves will take to the hardwood against the Cougars again Saturday
at 7 p.m. at the Thunderdome as a finale to the Zanatta Alumni Games.
