The former Lakehead Thunderwolves  basketball star has signed a contract to play for Towers Speyer-Schifferstadt in the German Second League.

“I’m excited at the prospect of playing again next year,” said Verboom in a release issued by the school on Tuesday.

The five-year veteran took last season off to coach and teach in Timmins, but decided the itch to play was too strong.

“After taking a year off I have realized how much the game of basketball means to me, and I hope to make the most of this tremendous opportunity,. I am looking forward to playing in a small town where I can be involved with the team and its younger club programs.”

Verboom will have a teaching role with the club’s basketball program, which features up-and-coming players.

Speyer acts as a training centre for high-potential players in the Rheinland-Pflaz region, and offers teams in a variety of age groups, as well as three lady’s and two men’s teams.

“It’s hoped Kathryn will bring her experience, intensity and leadership qualities to the team,” said Speyer coach Mike Gould. “There will be a natural transition period for her to adjust, but after having a successful career at Lakehead University we are sure Kathryn will continue that success at the Towers.”
