Jon Kreiner has added experience to his Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball coaching staff.
On Friday Kreiner announced that Kathy Williams-Waruk, a two-time national champion as a player with the Bishop’s Gaiters, has signed on as an assistant coach. A Canadian Interuniversity Sport official for the past decade, Williams-Waruk has coached all levels of the game, from under-13 to junior varsity.
It’s a challenge she’s looking forward to undertaking.
“I enjoy teaching and passing on my knowledge to others,” she said in a release issued by the team. “I want this team to learn they can achieve anything with hard work, and I’ll make every effort to help them realize that.”
Williams-Waruk is also a former professional boxer who once won the IBA junior featherweight title and at one point was ranked No. 1 in the world in her category.
Kreiner said her experiences can only help the Wolves as they battle for that ever-elusive berth at nationals.
“She has been successful at every level of every sport she has competed in, and her hard work, dedication and fierce competitive desire has driven her athletic success,” Kreiner said.
The Wolves kick off the 2010-11 season Nov. 5 in Toronto. Their first home game is Nov. 12 against York.
