THUNDER BAY -- Squeaking into the post-season at the last possible minute has its upside.

NORTH BAY -- The run of dominance for the Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s Nordic skiers continues. Lakehead captured their 11th straight championship banner, placing first at the OUA championships held in North Bay this weekend.

When you’re jockeying for playoff position and fighting for the right to host a post-season game, it never hurts to upset a team in front of you in the standings. It helps when your top players have extra reason to win.

Saying goodbye is never easy. But when you leave on a winning note, it helps dry the tears a little quicker.

Mike Hammond and the Lakehead Thunderwolves played hockey giant killers on Saturday. Hammond scored a natural hat trick to pace the Wolves to a 4-1 road win over the Western Mustangs, completing the two-game sweep in the best-of-three series.

The Thunder Bay North Stars got back on the winning track on the road on Friday night, thanks to a two-goal performance from newcomer Aaron Wesley-Chisel.

The rivalry has been resurrected.

The city is extending winter hours at the Thunder Bay Conservatory. City officials on Wednesday said through April the Dease Street facility will be open Monday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Weekend hours are 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The 2010 World Junior Baseball Championship continues to give back to its host community.
