In an already growing market, Toke House is leading the way

Toke House expanding with a new storefront in Current River and another in Dryden.

As a small and local business owner, Steve Kis is excited about the future of Toke House, a boutique, recreational cannabis store. After opening the first storefront on James Street in June 2020, Toke House is expanding throughout Northwest Ontario.

“Being local to Thunder Bay and growing up in Westfort/Neebing has definitely helped re-connect with a lot of friend and families that we normally wouldn’t have had the chance to,” Kis says, “It’s really a tight connected group that these locals support, and I truly think that if it was anyone else, they wouldn’t have been so well received.”

The expansion of Toke House in a market slated to have 18 storefronts by the end of 2021 is a job only a Thunder Bay native can conquer.

“This region really stands behind locals and loves to see friends succeed, especially during these times. We are very humbled by the support for our little flagship store and hope to continue to see the same results in Current River and Dryden,” Kis says, excited about the expansion.

A local original

After opening the first storefront in June 2020, a neighbouring store to his already successful cannabis accessory shop, Kis decided to expand across town into Current River, sandwiched between a vape store and cannabis accessory store.

In a neighbourhood that’s close-knit and right off the expressway, it’s a dynamite location to begin a successful expansion.

“People are getting behind the new businesses [in these locations because of the] population density [and] corner store feel,” Kis says about why he chose Westfort and Current River as the locations for Toke House.

As a boutique store offering hand-picked merchandise, Kis and his staff are knowledgeable about the product and dedicated to assisting their customers with finding exactly what they need.

“Every week we order new products based on customer feedback, leaning on our staff’s industry knowledge. It’s exciting to see an industry finally stabilize and produce these unique infused products like bath bombs and bath salts to skincare and beverages. It’s not just about the dried flower anymore.”

Offering a welcoming and modern environment, the experience of being a Toke House customer differs from the mainstream.

Expanding even further

Thunder Bay isn’t the only place Kis is expanding. Later this year Toke House will be opening its third store in Dryden.

“Dryden is exactly what the Toke House culture is all about. A proud community that supports locals and takes care of their neighbours first. As soon as you pull in, you really feel the buzz of the growing city, and we wanted to contribute to that in any way we can.”

Kis plans on hiring 14 staff for this location and says that he is proud to use local contractors for the store’s construction which is located at the Golden Mile Plaza.

With an already successful expansion in Thunder Bay and plans for storefronts around Northwestern Ontario, Kis and his team are leading the way in the future of small businesses.
