Canadians spend a lot of time and energy thinking and talking about the weather – look, I’m doing it right now.

The weather outside has been mighty frightful this past week or so.

It’s budget time and the city is warning taxpayers to brace themselves for hefty tax increases.

To the editor: Substantially lower business property assessments in recent years have led to an alarming jump in residential property taxes in Thunder Bay, along with artificially inflated housing prices, all within a very short period of time.

As a boy I was painfully shy and whenever company dropped by I would hide under the bed. As I grew older I overcame this affliction, mostly, although it did leave me with one long-lasting effect.

The year 2014 is winding down in a hurry. For some, it’s 365 days they’d like to forget. It’s been a taxing year for police, who have had to deal with 10 murders and counting.

Canada received another international scolding recently when U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon mocked our country’s pathetic efforts at reducing green house gas.

To the editor: I have read with great interest the recent articles concerning the Thunder Bay District Jail and especially the meeting with Premier Kathleen Wynne and local correctional staff. Some of the things I read are factual and some are not.

Supporting Shelter House’s Street Outreach Program makes a lot of sense. On Monday, council gave the homeless shelter $50,000 to keep the program running.

To the editor: Please reconsider the ethics of posting a graphic photograph of an accident as the header to a new article. The victim, Darlene Kooistra, was my aunt.
