Letters to the Editor

OPINION: Event centre has divided our city

Thunder Bay is changing, what isn’t changing are high taxes and people’s perception of an unsafe city. We have housing issues, infrastructure issues and seniors who may soon be unable to afford to live in their own homes. .

EDITORIAL: Tackling homicides

As economist Livio Di Mateo so eloquently writes, the proposed event centre has overshadowed this election. Unfortunately it’s been to the detriment of other issues, all of which must be addressed by the next council.

OPINION: Six old white guys

The mayor’s debate at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium was revealing in a number of different ways. There were no knock-out punches or clear winners but there were some performances of note, for good or ill.

LETTER: Large gulf of misunderstanding exists on land-claim issues

To the editor: We have read with interest the comments and letters associated with Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (“KI”) and their recent decisions with respect to the development of their traditional territories.

OPINION: Citizens need better accountability, transparency at city hall

There has been a lot of discussion about accountability and transparency in municipal government during this election campaign and in particular during the Mayor’s debate last week.

OPINION: Water rate a big concern for residents

One of the big concerns residents have living in this city is the dramatically rising water rates. Over the past 10 years, water rates have increased over 60 per cent.

LETTER: Youth face too much violence

To the editor: Children and youth are as concerned about safety as everyone else. The recent tragic incident at Silver City where a high school student was killed raises concern as to why young people are carrying weapons.

OPINION: Event centre debate really about future direction of city

As the election approaches and I begin to finalize my candidate selections, I have to say that I am heartily disappointed with the political discourse associated with our vision of the future of the city.

LETTER: Why are taxes going up?

To the editor, Many in our community believe that taxation levels have ballooned out of control, while many on city council congratulate themselves on “containing” past tax increases at or close to inflationary levels.

LETTER: Trustee did say school closure writing on the wall

In September, I began research into the city's demographics, its aging and shrinking population. I called the school board to ask for enrollment figures and projections. Twice I called.
