Tikinagan launches radio show

This month Tikinagan Child and Family Services launched a new weekly radio show.
Tikinagan radio show

As Tikinagan expands services in Thunder Bay, their voice and message have been heard loud and clear through Northwestern Ontario since 1984 and earlier this fall, they took to the radio.

“We are excited to introduce regular, weekly programing on Wawatay as extension to the work we do in bringing everyone together,” said Thelma Morris, Tikinagan’s executive director. She kicked off the new show on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Kahkenuh Aweyuk: Everyone Together on Tik Talk Radio is broadcasted on the Wawatay Radio Network every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 p.m.

Although this is a new venture this year, Tikinagan is not new to the sounds of radio. Tikinagan has been using the radio as a medium to communication with First Nation communities since its infancy in the 80s. Today, many First Nations use the radio as a primary communication tool to share events, gatherings, and updates. Much like the Tikinagan service model Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin, which means, "everyone working together to raise our children," the radio helps communities stay connected.

Partnering stronger

Wawatay is a network out of Sioux Lookout and began the same year as Tikinagan in 1984. Tikinagan is able to reach more than 300,000 square kilometres, beaming in nearly all 30 First Nations Tikinagan serves, including Thunder Bay. Streaming online can be done anywhere across the globe.

Radio show content will include agency updates, prevention and education services, child safety and protection, and special guests.

Wawatay is the only northern radio station that offers Oji-Cree language programming.

Morris noted that the show will honour the language with most broadcasts spoken in English and Oji-Cree.

“Language is the keystone to cultural identity and to the preservation of culture. We strive to communicate effectively using our First Nation languages, both verbally and in written materials, with the children, families and communities we serve.”

Streaming and beaming

This is an exciting time for Tikinagan as 2020 has proven to welcome in new opportunities and partnerships to assist with long term care and success.
