THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead District School Board reported new COVID-19 cases at four Thunder Bay schools Saturday, adding to a growing list of schools impacted by the virus over the past week, while health authorities also declared an outbreak at a local daycare.

That included two at Woodcrest Public School, and one each at Ecole Gron Morgan Public School, Kingsway Park Public School, and Hammarskjold High School.

One case was previously reported at Gron Morgan on Thursday.

Parents or caregivers of students in impacted classes or cohorts will be directly contacted by public health, the school board said in a release issued Saturday afternoon.

New COVID-19 cases have been reported at nine local schools over the past week, as Thunder Bay saw COVID-19 cases surge to levels not seen since early June.

In addition to the four where cases were reported by the LDSB Saturday, those include St. Ignatius, St. Ann, St. Martin, Elsie MacGill, and Westgate.

The health unit also declared an outbreak at the Step by Step childcare centre on Arthur Street. Two people association with the centre had tested positive for COVID-19, the agency said, and at least one of those was believed to have spread in the childcare setting.

Anyone considered a high-risk contact of those cases will be contacted, the health unit said.
