HIKE FOR HOSPICE

Signs, signs, everywhere there's signs…

You may notice some bright fuschia yard signs on neighbourhood lawns as you travel around the city in the coming weeks. If you happen to come across one of these colourful lawn placards, it means someone there is HIKING FOR HOSPICE!

Paul Bishop, pictured in the accompanying photo, is one of those people. Paul has been an enthusiastic and dedicated Hike for Hospice committee member for the past few years. This year, Paul is hiking in memory of his uncle David, who died from complications of COVID-19.

The signs are a part of the Hike kick-off and are a fun way for Hospice Northwest to let our community know that the annual fundraising event has switched gears this year and is now being held on Sept. 13 as a virtual Hike. Each person who proudly displays them are hiking in memory of a loved one they have lost. The signs also have a QR code in the corner, which allows people with smart phones to scan the link and go directly to the Hike registration page. There they can sign up to Hike or make a donation to the event.

Hospice Northwest relies on the funds raised by the annual Hike for Hospice to help cover the costs associated with providing compassionate companionship to over 400 clients and families each year who are facing their end-of-life journey or grieving the loss of a loved one. The goal for the 2020 is $50,000.

The Hike for Hospice is a national event that happens across Canada each year, and is designed to raise awareness and funds in support of hospice palliative care. 2020 marks the ninth year that Hospice Northwest has hosted the event in Thunder Bay. Typically 300+ participants gather at Boulevard Lake to walk three or five kilometres. This year, hikers are encouraged to walk wherever they are most comfortable – in their own neighbourhoods, favourite trails, or at Boulevard Lake. Hike organizers will be set up at the Adelaide Monarch Butterfly garden 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13 to greet individual walkers. Colourful ribbons will be available to tie on the Butterfly Remembrance Wall located at the Adelaide Street garden. Social distancing protocols will be in place to ensure public safety.
