SELKIRK, Man. — RCMP in Manitoba have laid charges against a Thunder Bay man who allegedly swallowed drugs to smuggle into a prison.

The 23-year-old man was initially arrested Monday morning in Selkirk after police investigated a report of a break and enter in progress at a business.

The suspect fled the scene on foot but was apprehended a short time later.

After speaking with him, officers confirmed his identity as Lennox Atlookan and learned that he was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for a parole violation.

While the man was in custody, it was discovered that he had ingested a balloon filled with what is suspected to be heroin and methamphetamine, with the intention of smuggling them into prison.

He was taken to hospital to ensure his safety.

RCMP have charged him with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, as well as breaking and entering and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
