Despite claiming a long-awaited city football crown, Jesse Austin knows his job isn’t over yet.

The Thunder Bay Border Cats will open the 2014 season at home. The St. Cloud Rox will visit Subway Field on May 27, kicking off a four-game home-stand to start the Northwoods League team’s 12th season.

A pair of Thunder Bay Queens teams will return home this weekend with gold medals.

Taylor Santorelli scored twice and added an assist Saturday night to help the Thunder Bay North Stars salvage a weekend split with the visiting Dryden Ice Dogs.

They may be the No. 6 team in the nation, but the Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team showed Saturday night they’re still a work in progress.

The Ryerson Rams were too much for the Lakehead. The sixth-ranked squad ran the Wolves ragged at the Thunderdome on Saturday night and pulled away in the fourth, scoring 24 points to earn a 77-65 win.

The Thunder Bay Queens sent three teams to Minnesota, and all three picked up Saturday morning wins. Playing in the All-American Girls hockey tournament in Blaine, MInn., three different age groups of Queens made the most of their mornings.

High school volleyball had a more prominent stage than ever before in the city this week. For the first time, Thunder Bay hosted the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association’s boys’ AA volleyball championship.

A three-goal second and fourth straight tallies overall handed the Dryden Ice Dogs a 4-3 win Friday night over the Thunder Bay North Stars.
