THUNDER BAY -- More than 70 Special Olympics athletes from all over Thunder Bay were competing at the Lakehead University Hangar Thursday for a chance at their spot in the upcoming Special Olympics Championships.

Runner Kevin Tree captured bronze at the OUA cross country championship. It’s the first medal of any kind for Lakehead University since 2000. Overall the Thunderwolves men grabbed fifth spot at the Waterloo, Ont.

They led through three quarters, but couldn’t hold on. The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team dropped a 79-67 decision Saturday night south of the border to the Bemidji State Beavers in their penultimate pre-season contest.

The home cooking advantage had to give way at some point. Unfortunately for the Thunder Bay North Stars, it chose the final three minutes of the third period on Saturday night.
