Thunder Bay’s Amanda Makela made 24 saves as Canada opened the women’s world under-18 hockey championship with a 9-1 romp over Switzerland on Saturday.

It was a wonderful year in sports for Thunder Bay in 2010, starting with one of the most successful events the city’s ever hosted.

Amber Peterson is living proof that freestyle skiers can make it out of Thunder Bay. On Thursday she gave up a portion of her Christmas holiday to help the next generation learn what it takes to become an Olympic level skier.
